Where To Eat: Pizzeria Via Stato

 Pizzeria via Stato

Farm-to-table, Italian food in River North, hand pulling cheese, casual Italian dining–these are all things ten years ago you would never have expected in a restaurant. Yet roughly a decade ago when Lettuce Entertain You opened Pizzeria Via Stato they began by doing all of that. Being one of the first Italian restaurants in the downtown River North area, this spot quickly became a staple that remains so to this day. The other factors, great food, healthy options, & a comfortable atmosphere, are all proof why it’s been such a go-to. The lively wrap around patio & rustic decor don’t hurt either…

A well-constructed appetizer board is always a popular choice but it takes a lot of knowledge to carefully curate one. Through the chef & staff’s expertise, this antipasti board is not to be missed. This diverse plate contains a small piece of each essential: fra’mani salame, Vermont soft-ripened goat cheese, & our absolute favorite on the board, warm house foccacia which is filled with olives & caramelized onions.

The fresh Ciabatta we received upon arrival made for the perfect base to our roasted garlic appetizer which was infused with balsamic & extra virgin olive oil. Definitely a must on our list.

The veal meatballs came highly recommended being noted as both a staff & customer favorite. We were blown away with the portion of this appetizer as there were more than enough for a medium sized party within one order. This dish which is paired with a classic tomato sauce, parmesan cheese, & thins slices of basil, truly lived up to the hype.

Last but certainly not least was the pizza. In a city filled with deep dish pizzas, this one was quite the contrary: a cracker style crust. We opted for the Margherita pizza which was topped with crushed San Marzano tomatoes, hand pulled mozzarella, & basil. The thin & crispy crust served as an incredible base highlighting all the toppings. Between it’s delicateness & fresh flavors, this is one pizza you won’t feel guilty eating all summer long.
