New Year’s is a time for fresh starts and a renewal of energy for many people. In order to drive lasting change in your life and stick to your goals, there are a few things to think in order to set yourself up for success this year:
1. START FROM A PLACE OF GRATITUDE
Many people set new year’s resolutions because they feel they are lacking. They aren’t good enough, they aren’t smart enough, thin enough, etc… This mindset limits satisfaction when you achieve your goal (if felt at all, you’ll be inclined to keep achieving more goals and will continue ignoring an empty feeling inside of you). Take some time to reflect and give thanks for where you are in your life right now!
2. SET SMARTR GOALS
Here’s a SMARTR weight loss resolution example:
Specific: I want to lose 10 lbs so I can feel good in my skin!
Measurable: I will be able to fit comfortably into my old favorite pair of jeans and I will weigh myself every 1-2 weeks to make sure I’m staying on track.
Achievable: I know I haven’t been eating well recently; that has caused me to gain weight. I have a plan that will help me reach my big goal. I will have to say no to some Netflix, but I can afford to do that:
-I am going to meal prep veggies, a grain and protein on Sundays so I can make salads for lunch 5 days/week
-I’m going to add one more day/week of exercise at the gym and finally
-Focus on incorporating deep breathing into my routine.
Realistic: It is realistic to meet this goal in the timeframe I set.
Timeframe: I will lose this weight over 3 months so that I don’t feel deprived. By not rushing, I will prevent overwhelm and burnout.
Reward: At the end of each month, I’ll treat myself to a manicure and pedicure. Adding a reward and a celebratory component to my goals will help me continue on my journey – I’ll look forward to my reward.
3. MAKE THE PROCESS AS FUN AS POSSIBLE
If you are trying to lose weight, find foods you love, that will satisfy you and keep you from feeling deprived. Instead of going out to dinner, can you throw a no-processed food potluck with your friends? Find exercise you actually enjoy doing, even if it’s just walking.
4. SHARE YOUR GOALS WITH TRUSTED FRIENDS, FAMILY, & COWORKERS
When your loved ones know you’re serious about meeting a goal, they can hold you accountable or help motivate you when you’re feeling a little defeated.
