NYFW FW ’17 Recap

What a whirlwind this past week has been. Our first full fashion week was a success & we cannot wait to share every detail with you all. From the shows we saw, the trends emerging, all to way to everything we ate while in NYC, there is so much to tell.

We must admit it’s true, the city truly doesn’t sleep; or at least we didn’t while we were there. Perhaps it was because there is SO much to do or simply because we were beyond inspired by everything we saw (we’ve never been more eager to continue working!), whatever it was, we loved it.

Whether you’re hoping to attend NYFW one day, are planning an upcoming trip to NYC, or are wanting to know which trends will be popular next season, we’ve got it all covered for you below:

Where To Eat:

First things first, let’s be honest, who isn’t curious what people eat during NYFW. In a city with some of the most incredible food is it really true that people in the fashion industry don’t touch a thing of it during the week?! Well, we can’t speak for everyone but for us that was certainly not true. In fact, it seems like we were overloaded with pizza, pasta, & every carb possible! Here are some of our favorite spots to eat in NYC: Rocky’sII for pizza & pizza with pasta on it (!!), Juice Press for some delicious yet super healthy food & drinks, & Serafina for the most amazing truffle risotto that’s actually made with Veuve Clicquot (#fancy).

Shows We Saw:

Ok now onto why you’re really here, the shows. During fashion week most designers show their designs in either a show (your standard runway) or presentation (models standing around while those in attendance walk around to view). We attended a handful of each with one exception: Zac Posen. Leave it to the creative genius to show his designs in an exhibition instead. Zac photographed & filmed his designs on models beforehand & then opted to show his designs on posters & a movie screen. Similar to a museum exhibition this was such an innovative & incredible way to truly see the clothing move & still all at once. The other shows we saw were: Cushnie et Ochs (classic yet alluring designs), Francesca Liberatore (feminine yet grungy), Leanne Marshall (whimsical gowns), & Sherri Hill (embellished & fun dresses). The presentations we saw were: Club Monaco (feminine, floral, & fun) & RtA (the ultimate street style off-duty clothing).

Trends To Look Out For:

While no two shows were even slightly similar, there were some ever-present trends that stood out to us amongst the shows.

1. Unexpected Cutouts: As seen at Cushnie et Ochs, Leanne Marshall, & Club Monaco, designers are updating the current cutout trend & placing it in unexpected spots for a fresh look. Cut out shoulders were moved down to cutout biceps, cropped sweaters are now getting even shorter allowing for a space between the collarbone & v-neck, & hips are even being shown through cutouts in the middle of dresses.

2. Matchy Matchy: Nearly every show & presentation we attended showcased a two piece set that either matched in style or fabric. From powerful pantsuits to outfits that looked like jumpsuits but were actually two separate pieces, this is one trend we could totally get behind. We love the versatility of being able to wear this trend fully or each piece on it’s own.

3. Luxe Embellishments: Nothing made us happier than seeing this trend walk down the runway over & over again. Sherri Hill demonstarated this trend in her velvet beaded designs while Leanne Marshall showcased it in rich lace appliqués on her dresses.

Behind-The-Scenes:

While the shows were absolutely incredible, one of our favorite parts of NYFW were the events & venues. Our favorite spot to hang during the week was the Café by Papyrus which was located in the main NYFW venue: Skylight at Clarkson. Papyrus was super generous constantly handing out their amazing greeting cards (different ones each day!), providing guests with water, coffee, tea (essential during this week), & even had a mailing center where you could write notes to whoever you wanted! It was truly the perfect spot to hang in between shows. We also visited a few of our favorite brands & showrooms while in town which is always a blast getting to see what they’re working on. Another perk of the week were the events such as the ShopStyle Social House where you could browse brands while sipping champagne & taking in some insanely gorgeous view of NYC.
