5 beauty experts share theirfavorite foods for glowing skin

“I love incorporating vitamin rich foods into my diet that I know I’ll never get tired of. A few of my favorites are fresh oranges (vitamin C), cucumbers (for de-puffing), & spoonfuls of honey (anti-bacterial)! Yum!”

Probiotics: “Studies have shown a link between probiotics and skin clarity and glowiness — eating or taking supplements with probiotics regularly can help ward off inflammation, regulate pH and improve skin’s barrier function. I’m not a big yogurt person, so I drink kombucha (this is my favorite) or take a supplement from Care/of or Sakara. Sakara also makes probiotic chocolates, which are so good.”

Water: “Every time a celebrity says their best skin-care advice is to drink lots of water, I want to roll my eyes. But it really can help — just maybe not for the reasons people usually think. Derms are murky on whether drinking a ton of water can actually help keep skin hydrated, but keeping your body in general hydrated is important for health and energy, which in turn are important for skin health. And I figure, if I’m drinking lots of water or sodium-free seltzer, it also means I’m avoiding other things, like sugar-laden juices (sugar is the enemy of good skin, any expert will tell you).”

Antioxidants: “I’m a big believer in the power of antioxidants, whether applied topically via a serum or ingested. It’s important to do both! That means leafy greens, like kale — I make a giant kale salad and toss it with a homemade dressing I make with white miso, olive oil, apple cider vinegar, dijon mustard and a tiny bit of honey. It’s addicting. I also love all berries, especially blueberries. And then I like to take a supplement to round out my antioxidant intake. I’ve found the A Complete Beauty Concentrate pills, which contain tons of antioxidants, as well as collagen, to be incredible for my skin.”

Your skin really reflects what you put into your body. It’s important to feed your skin by eating a variety of fresh, healthy foods that give the depth of nutrients we need throughout the year. I personally suffer from eczema, so I need to be extra careful with my diet (eczema flare ups can be trigged by diet). For glowing skin, avoid dairy, wheat and sugar as much as possible.

Make sure you are drinking A LOT of water. Many of my celebrity clients add chlorophyll drops to water, and I love doing this too when I’m experiencing breakouts. Drinking a lot of lemon water is beneficial for ALL skin types, because it not only keeps you hydrated, it also alkalizes your system. Also, eat as many greens as you can. I like starting my day with a green juice or smoothie. I incorporate ingredients like Aloe, Celery, Spinach and Cucumber.I love blueberries and have them almost every morning in a smoothie. Wild blueberries have one of the highest level of antioxidants per serving among fruit. They also fight inflammation on a cellular level, which is a significant factor in degenerative aging. They’re high in fiber and low on the glycemic index. Buy ORGANIC because fresh berries are one of the foods that are often sprayed with pesticides. Avocados are another food that tops my list for cooking for your complexion.  I love Mexican food and guacamole! Avocados contain nearly 20 vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients – including Vitamins C, B and E.  Not to mention they have Iron and Potassium – all great for your skin

High Fibre Cereal: “To keep my system moving. I like All Bran, & low sugar granola, which I alternate between every day.”

Fresh Fruit: “Every, single day, at least two – three pieces of fresh fruit! I love fruit & Australia has loads of tropical fruits, so this is easy for me. My favourites are papaya in summer & mandarins in winter.”

Iron supplements: “I get iron deficient, which makes me lethargic – but also make my skin look pale.  When I am high in iron I have more colour in my skin!”

Sarah Gibson Tuttle, Founder, Olive & June

Tea: “Olive & June recently launched Beauty Tea & I’m obsessed. It was formulated with hair, skin & nails in mind & I drink it daily. Minty Lavender is my favorite!”

Almond Milk: “Made with Wellness’ almond mylk is made with the highest quality ingredients – including the most delicious vanilla I’ve ever had. I create my morning lattes around my almond milk, not the other way around.”
