Since my Mini Pop-Tart Cereal was such a hit I started brainstorming of other miniature delicious foods I could come up with. With that I bring you what I like to call: Shrunkin’ Donuts. Get it?!
Made from Cheerio’s, yup you heard me, Cheerios, these miniature “donuts” go great in a bowl of milk (duh), on their own as a really cute snack, as well as topped on larger donuts as donut sprinkles! Topped with frosting, cinnamon sugar, or powdered sugar these adorable donuts completely resemble the real deal treat. Bonus points if you deep fry your Cheerios!
Sure they end up looking like a treat for Barbie & you’ll eat at least 40 of them but they taste great & they’re really freakin’ cute! Plus, using the recipe from my mini donut cake, you can create slightly larger yet still mini donuts & use the Cheerio version to top them.
Mini Cheerio Donut Recipe
Ingredients
- 1.5 cup Cheerios
- 1¼ cup powdered sugar
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- cinnamon, ground
- 3 tbsp lemon juice
- food coloring
- sprinkles
- 2.5 tsp water
Instructions
- In one Ziploc bag combine ¼ cup powdered sugar & ½ cup Cheerios. Shake until all Cheerios are covered in sugar. Use toothpick to poke hole through center of Cheerio if filled with sugar.
- In measuring cup, pour ¼ granulated sugar. Cover the top of the sugar with cinnamon until the entire top is coated. Stir together. Pour into Ziploc bag along with ½ cup Cheerios. Add in 2.5 tsp of water. Shake until all Cheerios are covered.
- In mixing bowl, combine 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 drop food coloring, 3 tbsp lemon juice. Mix until combined. Dip one half of Cheerio into icing. Remove & top immediately with sprinkles. Set aside on parchment paper, sprinkle side up, until frosting hardens. (this will make quite a bit of icing but you can use the extra to either decorate larger donuts or make tons & tons of mini Cheerio ones!)
